Mod Podged Light Plates

After painting Rylee's room Pepto Pink, I took a look around her room to see if I could improve anything before I finished. The blaring off-white light switch covers called out to me for a change. Instead of painting them, I decided to try my hand at something else. Using Mod Podge and Scrapbook paper, I covered the ugly off-white plates and...voila, perfectly girly and fun Mod Podged Light Plates!

Here are the steps on how to do it.

First, start out with a normal, boring plate. Put it face down on the front of your scrapbook paper. Using a pen or pencil, trace the shape of the plate on the paper. Including inside the little rectangles for the switches.

Next, using an exacto knife or pointy scissors, cut out all the squares.

Use a plain paintbrush and apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the front of the faceplate. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for it to dry tacky. Next, paint another thin coat on the back of the cut scrapbook paper. The two coates enable the adhesive to work and help to get it to stick better. As soon as you place it on the plate start smoothing with your fingers to eliminate bubbles. The first try of this I didn't add that first coat to the plate and I had bubbles EVERYWHERE! Smooth, smooth and smooth some more. If you need to, use a flat backed object (I used a baby spoon) to smooth any errant bubbles.

Once this has dried (about 5-10 minutes depending on how thick you applied the Mod Podge) you can start finished up the sides. You can use an emery board or fine grit sandpaper to sand the edges to fit perfectly. I actually cut mine a little bigger to be able to fold down on the curve of the plate. Once you're done sanding the edges make sure all shavings are off the plate.

Next, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the front of the plate. It'll look really streaky, that's ok. The trick with Mod Podge is kind of like Eyeshadow. You can always add more. Once that layer dries, do another, and another if needed. Make sure you catch all the corners and edges to stay put. Allow it to dry completely.

Finally, put it up to the holes in the wall made previously. You can see where they are through the paper. Use your screwdriver to put the screws in and that's it! A completely covered Light plate! I ended up cutting mind wonky and will probably do this one again but for now, I doubt my daughter will notice ;)

Pink!!

I remember dreaming as a kid of a room with pink walls. I wanted that ultra-super girly room I saw on TV. We always rented throughout my life so it's never been possible for me to have a pink room. Enter child #1, who as luck would have it, is pretty darn girly.

When we moved into this home it was already pre-painted in all nuetral tans. Every single room is painted a different color tan, it's very Uncle Nidnods (Thank you Imagination Movers). It happens to work with most of my decor but not in Rylee's room. I recently got her bedset from Kmart (I would normally link it but Kmart.com is having some site issues) a set that includes lot's of bright colors and owls! Obviously, a change in wall color was in order.

I started on Thursday and didn't finish till late Friday afternoon.

The verdict? I LOVE IT! Everytime I walk by her room it makes me smile. Admittedly, the color is a bit bright but it's warm and girly to me. Finally, a pink room! Ok, now for the before and after shots. Keep in mind, I have many things to hang in the room but wanted to wait for the painting so it looks a bit bare.

What does it look like to you, go ahead take a minute. Yep, if you guessed the wonderful stomach soother, Pepto Bismol you are correct! Oh well, I still love the Pepto room.

Felt Food

This year I've decided to start making Christmas presents for my DD early on. I tend to be a bit of a procrastinator and usually do things last minute. Rylee has taken a liking to cooking and will occasionally come to me from her kitchen in the playroom with her plastic food. I've seen numerous tutorials online on how to make felt food and decided to give it a try. Not only is it pretty easy but it fulfills my need for instant gratification. I was able to pop out the pancakes, eggs and apple in one nap! I'm a huge perfectionist and will only post the good stuff I've made. A few wonky donuts and misshapen cookies are still lying on my craft table :) The most fun were the strawberries, look at how little and cute they are! Don't they look good enough to eat? Hopefully Rylee understand that felt food certainly doesn't taste as good as real food.

Curtains out of a tablecloth

When we moved in there were the beautiful(but plain) bay windows in our eat-in kitchen. I wanted something to add flair but not cover up the whole window. Dealing with our black and white vinyl flooring I had to match something to it. I found some great placemats at Target and saw the matching tablecloth and curtains. Each curtain was $20 a peice!!! I grabbed the tablecloth and decided to make my own.

Using another plain, white tablecloth sewed to the back, I divided it up to make 3 panels. Adding ribbon to the top and ties, I ended up with curtains even better than the ones at Target! The sewing isn't perfect but I plan to do some touch ups when I get more patience, lol.

I'm Baaaaaack

Yes, it's been a while. Almost a year. I was so busy with work and living, I ended up completely forgetting about my blog. Let's just jump right back in, shall we? We recently moved to Ft. Bragg, NC. and bought our first house! I love it! Many things to decorate and create. I'll be showing you some things I've created and where I got the ideas. See you soon!
